Chi non ricorda la canzone che chiude l'Unplugged in New York dei Nirvana, Where did you sleep last night?. Un Kurt Cobain all'apice della carriera, poco prima della tragica fine, guida il gruppo in una rilettura del suo repertorio in chiave acustica, arricchendolo di canzoni di altri reinterpretate in maniera straordinaria. Non succede spesso che la cover sia così superiore all'originale (come ad esempio nel caso di The Man who sold the world di David Bowie).
La chiusura è affidata a questa antica canzone blues che Kurt conosceva nella versione di uno dei suoi miti, il bluesman e folksinger Huddie Ledbetter, detto Leadbelly. Cobain l'aveva gi� cantata insieme a Mark Lanegan, il cantante degli Screaming Trees, ma la versione dell'Unplugged in New York è nettamente superiore.

Ma chi era questo Leadbelly?
Nato circa nel 1885 in Louisiana, del primo periodo della sua vita si sa molto poco. Intorno al 1915 incontrò il famoso bluesman Blind Lemon Jefferson, e lavorò e viaggiò insieme a lui.
Nel 1917 uccise un uomo e fu condannato a trent'anni di lavori forzati nella prigione di Huntsville. Leadbelly sostenne sempre di aver agito per legittima difesa, ma nel Texas di quegli anni era praticamente impossibile per un nero ottenere un processo equo. Se avessse ucciso un bianco probabilmente sarebbe stato condannato a morte. Si narra che riuscì a essere graziato dal governatore scrivendo una canzone che chiedeva perdono.
Nel 1930 venne arrestato nuovamente per tentato omicidio e fu spedito in una prigione della Louisiana dove fu scoperto da John e Alan Lomax, che ottennero per lui la libertà. Negli anni '30 diventò amico di folksinger bianchi come Woody Guthrie e Pete Seeger e iniziò un'attività di sostegno alle campagne della sinistra di quegli anni che lo portarono lontano dalle sue radici nel sud, fino a New York.
Nel 1949, dopo un viaggio a Parigi fatto nel tentativo fallito di conquistare il pubblico europeo, Leadbelly muore. L'anno dopo un gruppo folk guidato da Peete Seeger registra la sua "Goodnight Irene". La canzone arriva al primo posto nelle Billboard's pop charts.

Leadbelly era un mito non solo per Kurt Cobain. Anche la canzone Yellow Ledbetter dei Pearl Jam è basata su Leadbelly.
